How live scoring works

The sports of rugbyfootballsoftballleaguenetballhockeyfutsal and touch are all able to submits team sheets and score games live via mobile app.

The different scoring apps are powered by the same back-end connection to 'SKED' competition management system and the 'TeamBuilder' utility used nationally by clubs and schools to put players into teams and enter those teams into competitions.

SKED and TeamBuilder are modules of the Sporty.co.nz sports management platform used to organise most community sport throughout New Zealand as shown in this explainer video.

The live scoring apps let coaches and managers enter a unique scorer code to automatically see all game fixtures published for their own team(s). Since the app is connected with TeamBuilder, they can see their squad of players without needing to do any manual data entry. Each game day, you simply tap each person that will be playing and submit your team sheet.

Games are then scored point by point, where each app understands the unique naming and scoring conventions for each sport. So it forms a timeline of game events including tries, goals, runs, strikes and red/yellow cards as appropriate.

The apps let multiple people score at the same time. If scorers from opposing teams enter conflicting scores, the app can highlight t on screen to prompt scorers to double-check and ensure they align. Some apps also support the role of Referee/Umpire, in which case these scores take precedence over results entered by team scorers.

The live scoring apps use very little data. They're also able to work fully offline for scorers that are out of coverage or unable to get an internet connection. If so, the app syncs the results back to Sporty whenever they next connect to the internet.

Live scores can flow all the way back to public websites if desired. Sporty now provides a 'Match Centre' view that lets you display the game timeline minute by minute if you wish. Either way, game results also update back into SKED competition management system allowing organisers to avoid the need to manually key in game results. And standings tables can update automatically.
